Carl Sagan is a well-known, but deceased, agnostic. When I was an engineering student at Vanderbilt, I listened to Carl give a speech when he visited the campus. I thought he was well-spoken and sounded intelligent. Today, I realize he was leading people away from the truth, specifically by stating the age of the universe and how he thought it was created. He did not cite his sources of information with a way for me to independently verify his claims about the universe. It is currently impossible for us to prove how and when the universe was created. (I believe God himself will tell us the rest of the story when the timing is right.) I do not know if Carl was knowingly misleading people or if he was misled himself.
According to the book, Conversations with Carl Sagan, By Carl Sagan, Tom Head; Carl was humble enough to admit he did not know if God was real. So by definition, he was not an atheist, but he had serious doubts. I know how Carl felt, as I felt the same most of my life. Finally, this summer, I found the truth in Jesus, by the grace of God.
I prayed to God that he give Carl, if possible, another chance. Maybe he could be resurrected and be given one more chance to see the truth… perhaps on judgment day.
