Open Office: How to add more colors to the pallete

edited by Earl on Aug-02-2008

For many months I put up with using the default colors in OO Calc.  Most of the colors are too dark, in my opinion, to be useful for highlighting text.  The text in the cells are no longer legible for many of the colors.

Here is a before and after comparison.

Before:  Header is dark.  The text blends in with the background color with low contrast making it hard to read.

After:  Header is now a lighter color.  There is more contrast and the text is easier to read.

Using tips found at oooforum.org, I was able to add new colors to the pallete.

In the video below, I'll show you how I created a couple of custom colors.  (To start video, click on the image below.)
Get the Flash Player to see this content.

To add your own custom colors to OO:

1.  Tools -->  Options
2.  Expand tab for OpenOffice.org
3.  Click on Colors
4.  Select the color you want to replace.
5.  Change the RGB color numerical values.
6.  Click on Modify to save your changes, then press OK.

If you want some RGB colors to choose from, you could take a look at invision-graphics.com.  That's where I found the RGB color codes shown in the video above.

End.

Hi Earl, a while back I added colours to my OO installation but completely forgot how to do it. I wanted to use lighter colours to highlight as well and searched for instructions. Very good tutorial (I did not see the video, but instructions clear and to the point). Thanks!
