I use my Drobo strictly as a backup system. I back up my
Vista Ultimate machine to it every night. That worked fine
for
about a month until the Drobo got filled up. The hard drive
was full. I was disappointed that Vista didn't take care of this
issue on its own. Vista just starts giving error messages but no
tips on what to do. I deleted all of the backup files from the
hard drive to free up
space and let Vista backup run a full backup again.
Vista put a fresh backup onto the drobo, seemingly with no trouble.
Until... the next night... Vista tried to locate the backup
to add new and modified files but failed. The error looked like this:
"
The backup did not complete successfully.
An error occurred. The following information might help you
resolve the error: The latest backup set can not be found.
Make sure it is accessible and it has not been deleted. Otherwise,
create a new full backup. (0x8100000A) "
Possibly, the RAID format that drobo uses is not recognized correctly
by Vista.
Here are the steps that got my backup system working
again. I have to follow this procedure every several months when
the hard drive is full.
Delete the backup files. Vista doesn't have this option
in their backup and restore center. Find the folder on your hard
drive manually and delete it.
Make a new, fresh backup of your computer. Open the Backup and Restore Center.
Click on "Change settings"
Click on "Change backup settings" (to make a new, full backup)
Click Next on the next couple windows that pop up to keep current settings, then...
Select
check box to create a new, full backup and then save settings.
Backup will begin but there unforunately won't be much feedback
from Vista on what's happening. I try to be patient and let the
backup work for the entire day. It works for me.
Type “cmd”
and hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
That will bring you to the
command prompt in Administrator mode. It you still have UAC enabled, it
will ask you for permissions, click “OK”.
Navigate to your Vista system folder (i.e. C:\Windows\System32)
Type “fsutil
resource setautoreset true C:\” assuming that you have
your Vista on drive C.
Good job. Changing the backup conditions forced a new backup to
commence. I was trying all sorts of complicated stuff suggested on
other blogs (that didn't work) and this suggestion fixed it. It is
certainly not clear how to make it happen from the Vista prompts and
help etc. Lets hope that I have enough disc space to complete the
backup this time and I don't have the problem again. At least now I
know how to fix it. Well done and thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, smedley... I have my fingers crossed for you that it works.

Worked a treat. I now have a backup safely tucked away (or so it said). It
will be interesting to see if the rest of the functions worked as described.
